Vote on Federal Marriage Amendment

Falls short of passage

Often times its not what your legislator says but how they actually vote. The constitutional amendment to define marriage as the union of one man and one women was introduced again in both chambers of congress. The proposed amendment to the constitution of the United States states:

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled (two-thirds of each House concurring therein), That the following article is proposed as an amendment to the Constitution of the United States, which shall be valid to all intents and purposes as part of the Constitution when ratified by the legislatures of three-fourths of the several States:

Section 1. This article may be cited as the `Marriage Protection Amendment'.

Section 2. Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman. Neither this Constitution, nor the constitution of any State, shall be construed to require that marriage or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon any union other than the union of a man and a woman.'.

The amendment was voted on in the Senate June 7, 2006. The vote was 49-48. The amendment was voted on in the House today. The vote was 236-187. Both votes were below the required two thirds for passage. As compared to last year, the Senate vote was roughly the same and the House vote in favor has increased.
