The Border

Our last line of defense

By Barrett Psareas

The United States of America has something in common like all other nations around the world, borders. Unlike other nations, the United States has porous borders.

We have approximately 12,380 miles of coastline, 5,524 miles of the northern border and 2,066 miles of the southern border.  All together The United States of America has approximately 19,970 miles of border to protect.  Yet with all of the miles of border, there are only 1,000 Border Patrol Agents assigned to the northern border and approximately 11,200 border Patrol Agents on the southern border. If focusing exclusively on land borders and assuming Border Patrol Agents work in three shifts, that is one agent for every 16.6 miles of the northern border and one agent for every half mile of our southern border.

Its been more than four years since September 11th and yet we still have no control over our borders. The report of the 911 commission clearly linked the attack on our control with our failure to control our borders and a lack of immigration enforcement. Why?  I can not understand, why?

What is so special about the southern border that so many people illegally come through?  Are we that much dependent on illegal immigration in this country?  If so how did we get to be like that?  As of now, I will only opine on the borders only.

It is actually really simple and a fact regarding the security of our borders.  Follow the guidelines from the Constitution of the United States of America.  Article 1, Section 8, Clause 15: To provide for calling forth the Militia to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions.  I believe 12 million people coming across our borders would be considered an invasion.  Is Congress following the law?  No.  Still to this day there are no armed services patrolling the borders, even though the Mexican Army has crossed our southern border 216 times since 1996.

For that matter there are other rights that are being infringed against the will of the people and the guidelines from the Constitution of the United States of America.  Again, Article 1, Section 8, Clause 16 : To provide for organizing, arming, and disciplining, the Militia, and for governing such Part of them as may be employed in the Service of the United States, reserving to the States respectively, the Appointment of the Officers, and the Authority of training the Militia according to the discipline prescribed by Congress.  Your elected officials are not fulfilling their oath to protect and defend the people of the United States.

Another example from Article 1, Section 9, Clause 1: The Migration or Importation of such Persons as any of the States now existing shall think proper to admit, shall not be prohibited by the Congress prior to the Year one thousand eight hundred and eight, but a Tax or duty may be imposed on such Importation, not exceeding ten dollars for each Person.  There the southern States that border Mexico; California, New Mexico, Arizona, and Texas.  While the Governor's of New Mexico and Arizona both have declared a state of emergency, not one has ordered the National Guard to protect their border with Mexico.  These four states are a flood gate for illegal immigrants, human smugglers and drug smugglers south of the United States of America.

These are basic articles of the Constitution of the United States of America which are being willfully disregarded by our elected officials.  While the local and state governments point the finger at the Federal Government to enforce our immigration laws, the people suffer the effects of unmitigated illegal immigration.

Let me see if I can understand this.  If you catch someone that enters your house without your permission, you're going to blame the person that entered your home illegally, right?  So why can’t the local and state governments see it that way?  As it takes time, money and resources that local governments don't have, more than likely no action will be taken to assist the federal government. In addition, various local, state and federal politicians are afraid to ruffle the feathers of the Latino communities so they do nothing but point the blame at other entities of the Federal Government. Due to the failure of the federal government to act, they are partially right.

Let us go back to the person that entered your home illegally.  So now that this person in your home illegally, what do you do?  Call the local authorities and wait till they get to your home so they can remove this person.  What if the authorities never showed up?   So what is next?  You can contain this person; (Whether it is with a gun, rope, knife, fire poker, zip ties…) and call the local authorities again and yet they never show.  Well this is what it is like with illegal immigrants in our country but with the added comfort of cites and counties that provide sanctuary to illegal aliens. As these jurisdictions refuse to inquire about a person's legal status when providing various tax payer benefits, it only encourages illegal immigration.

Our porous border will be the downfall of the average Joe in this country.  We will have too many people in this country that will feed off our social services in which the middle class will have to pay for the services that come free to the illegal immigrants that come to our country.

Let us not forget.  On September 11, 2001 there were 19 people in this country illegally.  They were here for over a year, plotting, waiting with patience to strike.  If it took 19 people to do what they did on September 11, 2001, just imagine the possibilities with more than an estimated 12 million people in this country illegally. How many are here to do harm to this country as did the 19 terrorists on September 11, 2001?
